If I Wasn't Skint #4

If I wasn't skint, I'd totes (haha, get it?!) but this Bee and Puppycat tote bag. If you haven't seen Bee and Puppycat, you have to. It's made by the same people who do Bravest Warriors, with the adorable Catbug, and Adventure Time. Bee reminds me of myself whilst trying to be an adult and failing miserably.

Paying off the First of my Debt...

So yesterday marked the start of my journey to paying off my rent arreers...

After several emails back and forth with the people who manage the flat we eventually negotiated that I would pay £300 each month to pay off my debt. Yesterday I cleared £500 of my £3K debt.

It feels good.

So I Missed My Court Date...

The end of the tenancy for my flat is coming up on the 30th June, in preparation of this I went over to clean the flat and give my keys to my housemate. I also went to collect the post. Fairly straightforward, you'd assume.

It turns out that both me and my ex-housemate have had a court summons and we've missed the court date... She's been living in the flat and didn't think to collect the post from the post box and now we're both facing court charges and potential arrest for missing the court date, all for the sake of not paying council tax.

Oh God, why didn't I pay the council tax?!

A Comment on Cheap Housing

Recently me and Mike were looking for somewhere to live as I have been given notice for my current house. It's a pain in the arse attempting to navigate the weird and wonderful world of renting especially when you're trying to rent as cheaply as possible.

Where the bloody hell have all the decent houses gone?! It's either houseshares or unfurnished and needing work. Furnished places are extremely hard to come by which sucks because we are so not in the position to be buying furniture considering my current financial situation. Everywhere that is has a ridiculous rent and and even higher deposits.

The appeal of the lucrative student market, has caused many landlords to turn their houses into student only house-shares. In fact the likely reason I've been given notice on my house is because the landlord is wanting to rob budding academics of their student loans. With a bit of basic maths I've worked out my landlord could double his monthly income if they put in 3/4 students so it's no wonder so many landlords are choosing to put students into their houses. I know students need somewhere to live, but so do working people on lower incomes/higher outgoings like myself and so many young adults.

I am quite lucky in that I'm not getting as ripped off as my counterparts in the capital where 700 odd quid will get you something resembling Harry Potter's bedroom.

Great for a midnight snack though...
Essentially we're all getting swizzed with extortionate rents apart from unscrupulous landlords, they're laughing all the way to the bank. Someone ought to do something about this shit.

If I Wasn't Skint #3

It's hard not to be bombarded by advertising and want material things, it's worse when you have no disposable income (#3rdWorldProblems...). For me looking at pretty things is therapeutic and gives me something nice to aim for once I've paid off my debts.

Today, I'm lusting after these beautiful moonstone poison box rings, an absolute steal at £12! Get them here.

'Life is 10% what happens and 90% how you deal with it'

'Life is 10% what happens and 90% how you deal with it'

I've decided to finally take responsibility for my debt, some £3360 owed in rent arrears.

I'll let that sink in for a moment.

I know I needed some time to digest this news once it dawned on me.

It sounds ridiculous that someone, who has been so clever and careful with money their entire life, would find themselves up the proverbial body of water with no means of propulsion, but it happened.

I'd love to be able to blame this on the situation that lead me to leave my 'Stunning Plush City Centre Apartment' (as I'd described it on SpareRoom) but it was my own fault. Life is 10% what happens and 90% how you deal with it and I dealt with it 100% terribly. Or not at all depending on which way you view not paying your rent, I'm for the latter personally.

I was in a bad place emotionally, I was stressed at work and found myself tied into another housing contract, one which if I didn't pay would leave me homeless. For a very long time I acted as if I had a hold on the situation whilst actively being inactive. I didn't tell anyone the gravity of the situation for a good few months, I had internal guilt whilst externally portraying the part of a fully fledged adult. I didn't want anyone to worry about me even though life was spiralling out of control. I was feeling worse and worse about myself and the debt was stacking higher and higher.

Fast forward to today and I now owe £3360, the equivalent of £420 per month over 8 months. I have decided to take responsibility for it because life is 10% what happens and 90% how you deal with it.

I'd like to say a massive thank you to my friends who've supported me through the last year or so. You are all truly diamonds. Special thanks to - Heavygate Boys, Pootpoot, Droy, Girkin, Amber and Mike.
